Chestnut Hill Bus Corp. was a bus operator in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It had two routes: "MADISON AVE" (via Water St., Middle St., Housatonic Ave., Madison Ave., Eckhart St., Park Ave., Old Town Rd. to Trumbull Shopping Park/Mall, with some trips extending further up Madison Ave. in Trumbull as far as Chestnut Hill Rd.), and "TRUMBULL SHOPPING PARK VIA PARK AVE." (same as the Madison Ave. line halfway up to Truman St.- then over to Park Ave.- north to Old Town Rd, and back to Madison Ave. into Trumbull Shopping Park); this bus only ran hourly, while the Madison Ave. line ran every 20 minutes. (Today, Trumbull Shopping Park is now a hugely expanded mall renamed Westfield Shoppingtown.) ***See two images: one of the rear of an actual Chestnut Hill Bus (at left side of photo background near Woolworth's - Trumbull Shopping Park, 1970), the other being a similar bus and color scheme.
Bridgeport's largest of the area's local bus companies was CR & L Lines. When this company folded in November 1972, Chestnut Hill re-routed its Park Avenue line to cover all of Park Ave. north of downtown in taking over a portion of CR & L's former #9 route, as well as the southern end of Park Ave. once served by #6. Its Madison Ave. line was re-routed via Washington Ave. between Main St. and Park Ave. to cover CR & L's former #10 route. This continued until consolidation with all Bridgeport local bus companies in 1975 saw the creation of Greater Bridgeport Transit District (aka - The People Mover). [Article by Ted Elliss]
