Two different companies operating streetcars and cable cars in the city of San Francisco, California have used the name Market Street Railway Company.

Market Street Railway Company (1893-1902)Edit

The first Market Street Railway Company was formed on October 14, 1893 by merging three cable car companies:

with three horsecar companies. It operated until March 20, 1902, when it was merged with the Sutter Street Railway and two electric lines to create the United Railroads of San Francisco.

Market Street Railway Company (1921-1944)Edit

In 1921 the United Railroads of San Francisco, which had fallen into bankruptcy, was reorganized under the name of the Market Street Railway Company. This company lasted until 1944, when its lines were taken over by the Municipal Railway of San Francisco.
