Queens Surface Corporation was a bus company in New York City, United States, operating local service in Queens and the Bronx and express service between Queens and Manhattan until February 27, 2005, when the MTA Bus Company took over the operations. QSC was established in 1988, as the successor to Linden Bus Co. Inc., a company established to takeover the bus services formerly operated by Queens/Steinway Transit Corp. The bus services operated by the company go back to a long line of companies extending back to the horsecar service in the village of Astoria in the 1860s. It was one of several privately operated bus companies in New York City. Queens Surface Corp. was privately held by the Gordon and Burke families. In 1988, Queens Surface Corporation was formed to replace the bus services then operated by Queens/Steinway Transit Corp., which itself was established following the merger of Steinway Transit Corp. into Queens Transit Corp. in 1986. The Queens Surface Corporation facility was located at 128-15 28th Avenue near the New York Times printing plant in the College Point neighborhood of Queens, New York. The routes operated by Queens Surface Corp. were taken over by the City of New York and turned over to the MTA Bus Company for operation on February 26, 2005; the depot has been renamed the College Point Bus Depot.

Historical backgroundEdit

Queens-Nassau Transit Lines began operating bus replacements for the New York and Queens Transit Corporation trolleys in 1937, and was renamed Queens Transit Corporation in 1957. Steinway Transit began operating buses over former Steinway Railway lines in 1938, and the two companies merged in 1986 to form the Queens/Steinway Transit Corporation. Queens/Steinway Transit Corp. was owned by the Salzberg family, dealers in scrap metal and a short line railroad operator, since it acquired the old New York & Queens County Railway Company. This acquisition was made for the purpose of replacing the street railway operations with buses and selling the scrap steel. Quuens/Steinway operated the merged routes until 1988, when the Linden Bus Company (which had operated in New Jersey) acquired the routes and changed its name to Queens Surface Corporation.
